Let’s Go Camping

If a band has an interesting myspace photo I’m far more likely to check them out than if it’s a boring squiggly picture. I don’t know why, I guess with the trillions of bands on myspace it’s easy to be picky. Hot Silk Pockets had this interesting photo, it’s of them hanging out in an alley-way in Reading.

Photo aside, I have to find some good music. Hot Silk Pockets’ twee English pop is good, and after a few listens I think it’s the punchiness of the bass lines and rough-edged recordings that I’m attracted to the most. I find a lot of English bands these days to be too polished and their chocolate-box recordings patronising. But not Hot Silk Pockets; I think they deserve just as much attention as their friends Pete and the Pirates.

The band takes their name from the little things people put in their pockets when they go camping in winter, in New Zealand we call them hand warmers. We don’t really use them, but I guess living thirty minutes out of London you’d need too. To date, the only people really singing their praises is Drowned in Sound, but hopefully that will change. They definitely have potential, but in a scene with countless similar sounding bands they’ll have to work extremely hard to get recognised.
