Somebody feed Zeus

Someone’s been feeding the cats strange things in Manchester. Like acid or Korg keyboards. Up in Manchester UK, cats make strange electronic dance music with keyboards and raucous guitar lines from the ’80s topped with scratchy, delirious vocals. Well, Copycats that is. The three-piece electronic outfit consisting of Alexander Hewett, Nick Delap and Jake Lucas-Nolan say, “We create ridiculous techno punk bizzaro pop in our bedrooms and play shows to a confused/dancing audience.” I say they play dirty electro that sounds like it’s been swimming in the sewers, and it’s freakin’ awesome. Their song Bedroom Demon seems most aptly named, as the young band eagerly profess a desire to be signed, even going so far as to post requests for a manager/label on their MySpace.
“We formed late November 07 and we want to really get somewhere with our music,” they say, “we believe that no two songs should sound the same. We’re here to supply the schizophrenic genre-defying feline pop that will be
“the soundtrack to the future spazcore disco phenomenon.”
Bedroom Demon blips and beeps along with video game earnestness, droning seamlessly into other songs Suns Son and Zeus Is On The Loose. While Copycats’ recordings have much to make up for in levels and mix mastering, what lies beneath – as with any self-sufficient, self-starting band – are great songs, enthusiasm and ideas. Copycats’ thinking is worlds beyond many of their counterparts and should see them helped along the golden path by some wise money merchant sooner or later. Trust me, with their blend of Horrors vocals, screwed rhythms and mad techno beat skills, what’s not to love?!
