Liars

“You are a man and I am a drug”
I’ll be honest, I’ve never paid much attention to Liars. At least not until I heard their new track ‘Disgusting’, which is currently the hot topic on a number of my favourite music blogs. With a bass line bigger than The Pixies and spoken word vocals reminiscent of The Creeping Nobodies, Liars have me hooked. Going through their back catalogue, I now understand all the fuss. Their reputation as one of the most inventive bands on the noise scene today is completely justified. If like me, ‘Disgusting’ is your first introduction to Liars then be warned, you’re unlikely to find any songs like this in their discography. ‘Disgusting’ is probably the most accessible song the band has ever made. So if you’re not so much a fan of true experimental noise music, you might wanna stick to Surfer Rosa or even Menomena’s Friend and Foe. Noise fans probably haven’t bothered reading this far.
But wait! Australians may rightly scoff at this song, quickly pointing out that their very own My Disco conquered this sound a few years ago. They do have a point, however there’s enough evidence to fairly say Liars did not rip of My Disco, ‘Disgusting’ is much slower and less abrasive than anything on Cancer or Paradise. I’m a huge My Disco fan, in fact I remember giving Cancer 5 stars in a magazine review, so perhaps I just love this minimalist sound.
