Unicorn! Whale!

Unicorns and Islands front-man Nick Thorburn is multi-talented indeed, you only need to listen to either of the aforementioned bands to know this. But Thorburn isn’t ready to stop there, he now has a new project called Human Highway, which he shares with Canadian singer/songwriter, and former Islands member Jim Guthrie. The pair have just written and recorded their debut album titled Moody Motorcycle, which will be released on August 19.

Described by Thorburn as a “Sad Album”, Human Highway definitely reinvents the style of Thorburns former projects. This collaboration showcases a relaxed side to his work, something he thinks stems from his relationship with Guthrie. The pair meet years ago through former Unicorns member Jaime Thompson and finally became friends when Guthrie worked on Islands first record in 2006. They now share a huge amount of respect for each other, an aspect that helps bind their music together. In an interview with Pitchfolk, Thorburn says “I think that it’s a great record to smoke opium to”, referring to the laid back nature that encases the entire record.

It’s a beautiful album, from a man with a beautiful voice. Combining two great song writers, Human Highway balances the Canadian folk tradition and contemparise’s it with a spice of pop music. Equally as good as Unicorns or Islands but ultimately incomparable.
