Rilo Reeder

This post is for a particular Auckland band who adore Jenny Lewis and her band Rilo Kiley. Pierre de Reeder for those who hadn’t already guessed, is the bass player in Rilo Kiley, who earlier in the week released his debut solo album titled The Way That It Was. Smooth, sombre and rolling along in contemporary folk rock style, de Reeder follows the solo path taken by Lewis. His voice is an entertaining accessory used to good effect, and while at times it blends a little bit into the background, de Reeder always reappears to take centre stage.

I’m not overly excited by this, but I know some of you will love it. It sounds a bit too much ‘Hollywood’ for my liking, washed, polished and mastered to spoon feed the easy listening American folk market. I prefer traditional folk; Polka Dot Dot Dot or The Duchess and the Duke come instantly to mind.
