First Lady ‘08

You may have noticed that we haven’t updated in about a week. We apologise, but the truth is we have been on a well deserved break. While on that break I listened to a lot of music and one artist that stood out above the rest was The Lady Tigra. As a member of influential hip-hop group L’Trimm, Lady Tigra crafted a sassy music career that inspired artists as diverse as Peaches to Gwen Stefani. Releasing three albums before the age of 21 the group then disappeared from the music scene, Lady Tigra moved back to New York and managed a popular nightclub. However in 2007 she returned, releasing her debut solo album Please Mr. Boombox; an album that stands up to anything ever released by L’Trimm.

Reminiscent of her early career, The Lady Tigra is finally continuing down the path of hip-hop legends. Please Mr. Boombox presents a timely reminder of happier days in hip-hop, back when the musical style was a street genre and big studios were a dream pursued by white folk with bundles of cash. Obviously things have changed a bit since then, hip-hop has populated the world and Lady Tigra has had the luxury of working with producer Mr. Sandwiches. His slick production helps polish her already intellectual rhymes and creative hip-hop spin, making the songs sound relevant and accessible to today’s youth.

Recently she has taken to the political trail, getting behind Barak Obama and performing at the recent ‘Obama-rama’ festival in Los Angeles. The event was organised as an Obama campaign fundraiser and featured voter registration booths and a drive to get behind the candidate offering actual ‘CHANGE’. The event also featured The Bird and the Bee, Electrocute and The Polyamorous Affair as well as others. On September 27, The Lady Tigra released a brand new track titled ‘First Black First Lady’, a song about Michelle Obama. She debuted the track live a week earlier at ‘Obama-rama’ festival to rapturous applause. Get behind Obama, get behind The Lady Tigra, both offer their change, and both have the power to succed.
