Rockin’ my soul in the bosom of Abraham/ when women meant something

My favourite garage grunge punk rock n roll label, In The Red Records, home to Jay Reatard, Vivian Girls and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, also release one of my new favourite retro grunge rockabilly bands, Speedball Baby, who I found out about through Five Dollar Priest. Their epic jams sound like all that is right with the world, with spunky, savage grit. Their howling harmonicas recall a time I surely wish I was around in, with a kind of unrestrained ’60s spirit that is so carefree it couldn’t have possibly been raised in today’s society. Do The BlackOut is wonderfully steadfast in rhythm and Cinema instantly captures your imagination, with tribal calls of “Cinemaaaaa…” tumbling into a scraper-ridden percussive landscape where shimmering strums and drum rolls reside. Making Elvis look squeaky clean, listening to Speedball Baby for the first time reminds me of the thrill and excitement of hearing grunge for the first time. A little bit dangerous, mysterious and fresh for your ears.
