One of my favourite bands from the recently published ‘Best Bands in NZ/Aus’ on popular Australian blog A- Reminder, is Brisbane’s The Boat People. The band has been around for a number of years now, but despite referencing Crowded House as their biggest influence and personal heroes, they remain uncharted here in New Zealand. Since the release of their first EP in 2002, they have received regular airplay on Australian radio and have signed a lucrative deal with US film and television publishers Bicycle Publishing.
Their back catalogue is actually quite big already. They have three EPs (Squeaky Clean, 2002; Three Pieces For Small Ensemble, 2003; Tell Someone Who Cares, 2004), and two full length albums (Yesyesyesyesyes, 2005; Chandeliers, 2008). Their most recent album Chandeliers is what bought them to my attention. With simple indie rock hooks and catchy, easy flowing lyrics, The Boat People draw comparisons to Post War Years, Idlewild and The Shins. It’s somewhat obvious that these guys will have radio success pretty much anywhere their music ends up, despite sounding a wee bit 2005. Perfect for the summer, when you don’t really want challenging music breaking the peace on your sunny north-facing deck, The Boat People have a positive outlook that carries happy vibrant energy.
