What Didn’t Make It?

Since we finished publishing the ‘End of Year’ list last Thursday, a number of people have asked questions about what bands came close and in particular what local bands got votes. So here’s a wee recap and a brief peek at some of the bands who got votes but didn’t quite make the top 20.

It’s also interesting to note a number of so-called ‘popular’ bands that got very few votes or didn’t feature at all. Of Montreal’s Skeletal Lamping, Little Pictures Owl + Owl, The Black Keys Attack and Release and Beck’s Modern Guilt all received very few votes, while Cut Of Your Hands album You and I, Santogold’s self-titled debut and Collapsing Cities Elixir Always failed to gain a single vote.

Strangers- Night Minutes 7″

Wellington hardcore band Strangers were very close to making the top 20, missing out by just one point. They seem to part of a scene in Wellington that involves a number of noise/hardcore bands that’s developing nicely. Hopefully the loss of highly respected venue Valve will not have a negative effect on Wellington’s hardcore scene.

Cosmic Rays Of Death- Of Doom EP

Cosmic Rays Of Death also came pretty close to the top 20. The band who originally featured former Mint Chicks bass player Michael Logie built a quite reputation for brutal rock and roll and after a series wicked live performances put out Of Doom. Matt ‘Flick’ Brennen now fronts the band and his distinctive musical style comes through stronger on both the EP and when the band performs live.

Fucked Up- The Chemistry Of Common Life

Experimental hardcore rock group Fucked Up hail from Toronto, Canada, the same area that has flourished over the past year spawning other notable bands like like Holy Fuck and Crystal Castles. Fucked Up are hard and heavy, with a punk aesthetic that separates them from their contemporaries in very small doses. People looking for some old style punk will find comfort in Fucked Up and that is what attracted voters.

Notable mentions also go to Kittentank’s Post-Modern Hoe Down, Hoopla’s SuperSportLeisure and Friendly Fires Self-Titled which all received multiple votes.
