Drone metal meets screamo noise rock in the form of two-fourths Sharpie Crows, one-fourth Dyke! Dyke! Dyke! and one-fourth HEAD. The Wellington band played a last minute show on Saturday night to a surprisingly well-filled room (considering the street looked like a scene form War of the Worlds) and by the end some people had left while other people just couldn’t get enough. Backed by pre-recorded distortion and at times some spoken words, the band flooded the room with a harsh kick of grinding distorted guitar, wailing keyboard notes and thundering heavy metal drums. The drumming was shared by Dyke! Dyke! Dyke!’s Dorian N and Sharpie Crows’ Jackson Hobbs and towards the end HEAD’s Jason Post joined them by bashing a single stand-alone drum. Vocals were also shared between Sharpie Crows guitarist Casey Latimer and Dorian. Most of the set was played with their backs to the crowd which displayed not only the band’s shyness but their concentration to ensure the music fitted together. While some came away a wee bit terrified and unconvinced that there was much substance to the band, I came away very impressed albeit with a slight ringing in my ears.
