Indie Forever

Sub-Pop Records was delighted to sign San Francisco indie band Vetiver in October 2008, so happy in fact, that they released a press release titled “At last! Vetiver is ours!” Now in 2009, they have another big announcement; Vetiver’s fourth album Tight Knit, will be the label’s first post-Bush release.
Vetiver is primarily the musicianship of Andy Cabic; a man whose musical story extends back to the early ’90s. As an integral part of North Carolina shoegaze, art-punk band Raymond Brake, Cabic had a rusty career that ended when he eventually left and moved to San Francisco. Once in San Francisco, Cabic met up with fellow musician Devendra Banhart while attending the San Francisco Art Institute. After playing live gigs throughout the city along with Joanna Newsom, the pair then worked together on the first two Vetiver albums. Cabic also co-wrote Banhart’s own break-through track ‘At The Hop’.
Tight Knit is the first album of original songs (Vetiver released a covers album titled Thing Of The Past in 2008), recorded without the help of Banhart. This then, is the first opportunity for fans to view Cabic solely as the muse behind Vetiver; Cabic is responsible for playing most of the instruments on the album (other musicians were only bought in to add minor key notes and give the album a live component). The first single from the album is a beautifully layered pop song, as intimate as the environment it seeks to create. In contrast to previous Vetiver songs, it has a gentle acoustic guitar line that pushes the song along, while more densely layered instrumentation has been stripped back to highlight Cabic’s idyllic pop accent. Fans across the indie spectrum, from Fleet Foxes, Islands and Little Joy to Beirut and Calexico will all cherish Vetiver. Tight Knit will be released on February 17.
