Broken Spindles is the solo project of Joel Petersen, the guitarist and bass player from The Faint. The project was originally started in 2001 when Petersen was asked to provide a completely original collection of instrumental music for a soundtrack to a friend’s film. The film score then developed into a more serious project and the first Broken Spindles album was written and released in 2002. The idea of writing more serious songs away from the band then developed, as Petersen found he had a lot more material in him than he originally thought. Although some tracks have a distinct Faint-like sound, they are completely stripped back to reveal just the bare bones of the band’s music. Despite some tracks resembling The Faint, many have no resemblance whatsoever. There’s actually a lot of diversity, ranging from lo-fi acoustic pop songs, shoegaze-style ambient noise music to more up-beat numbers with fuzzy bass riffs and dance beats.
Recently the project has taken Petersen on more of a journey than he may have initially anticipated. On February 17 he will release his fourth album titled Kick/Kick, his first on the newly formed Blank.wav label owned by fellow members of The Faint. He is then going on a short tour throughout the US. Petersen’s previous live excursions have teetered on disaster. Most of the music was recorded on a laptop computer and had a very small live component. He found himself having to reconstruct much of the music and eventually came up with the concept of combining live music (using some pre-recorded backing tracks) with video images. The idea initially worked well, however Petersen’s more serious ambition was to play his music completely live. For his upcoming tour he has put together a band to do exactly that.
