Wings of Worldly Pleasure

Celebrated experimental art/noise/punk band Crystal Antlers are finally about to release their long-awaited debut album. Tentacles will be out on April 6 in Europe and April 7 in America on Touch and Go Records, home to such acts as TV On The Radio, Slint, The Jesus Lizard, Butthole Surfers and Big Black. Crystal Antlers’ album will see original guitarist Errol Davis return to the lineup, which also includes guitarist Andrew King, drummer Kevin Stuart, percussionist Damian Edwards, organ player Victor Rodriguez and vocalist/bass/woodwinds player Jonny Bell.

However the band’s label is in jeopardy, yet another result of the crippling financial crises. Touch and Go founder Corey Rusk released a statement last week saying the label is ending their manufacturing and distribution for other indie labels they have serviced for many years – including Suicide Squeeze, Drag City and Kill Rock Stars – as well as making redundant an unspecified number of their staff. However it looks like Crystal Antlers’ release won’t be affected by this. Rusk said the label is set to return to its roots, and will continue on, “focusing solely on being an independent record label”. It’s not all doom and gloom, with Rusk ending positively – “It is the end of a grand chapter in Touch and Go’s history, but we also know that good things can come from new beginnings.”
