Silly Hats and Cigarettes
A few tracks from the upcoming Veils album Sun Gangs have been leaked; a couple have also been released by the band. The new album is due to be released on April 6 and from what we’ve heard of the new material it is pretty similar to their previous release Nux Vomica. One of the tracks ‘Killed By The Boom’ is a rather speedy rock song, with garage rock style guitars and lead singer Finn Andrews’ voice sounding slightly angry. Another track ‘Sit Down By The Fire’ is an acoustic song similar to the sort of thing we’ve come to expect from The Veils.
For those wondering what Finn Andrews has been up to lately, we can tell you, YES he still wears the hat. He recently displayed his anger in public by kicking in the window of a travel agency outside a popular music venue in Auckland. A pretty stupid idea really, especially when the venue is already constantly being hassled by the police for no reason whatsoever. Maybe he was upset that no one seems to talk about his band anymore. Oh well, I’m sure people will let him know if they like his new album.

What is up with everyone wanting to be a cunt about Finn? Who cares if he kicked in a window? People do dumb stuff. The police are cunts no matter what you do, and they probably hang around St Kevin’s ’cause someone tried to stab a girl ouside the Wine Cellar last year, and it backs on to a park full of rapists.
What else have The Veils been doing? Touring the US and Europe, recording a new album which is very, very good, and ignoring New Zealand media because we tend to be a bunch of assholes who obsess over ‘indie’ bands from Canada and things like Liam Finn’s beard.
I am all for independent music reviews, and it is wonderful to be able to write whatever you want without having to worry about what the advertisers are going to think, but fuck! Finn has a hat. I wear glasses. Sometimes John Campbell doesn’t wear a tie. But you don’t need to be mean. Unless you genuinely think their music sucks. Even then, you still don’t need to be mean.

Clearly, Nick, you wouldn’t know talent or beauty for that matter if it bit you on the left nut. Evidence of this is acutely stated in your most recent post on Doherty who you claim as being “Possibly the best British song-writer of our generation.” The new Veils album is a very accomplished piece of work, I think Finn Andrews and the band have done a brilliant job. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that is yours and this is mine.
Rebellious activity from musicians is hardly unheard of. In fact, it exudes from them. I was told once that Cave pushed a girl down a flight of stairs because she wouldn’t pash him. Now THAT’S something to blog about. For Christ’s sake Auckland. Things break, he even paid for the repair. Get over yourself.
As for the hat. You’re obviously all a little bit jealous that you don’t have a definitive trade mark or the stature and poise to pull one off.
