Mutual Appreciation
After reviewing Lissy Trullie’s debut EP here on EMJ I came across this beautiful video of Trullie and renowned solo artist Adam Green singing their wonderful rendition of Biz Markie’s Just A Friend in a bathroom somewhere, presumably on their tour last year. While the cover is admittedly old, it is undeniably lovely, a heart-felt rendition peppered with the emotional inflections of both boyish voices of Green and Trullie reverberating around the anonymous surrounds. In marked contrast to the original, it seems Trullie’s becoming quite the understated master of the cover song, with her mark-hitting cover of Hot Chip closing her debut EP.
The partially animated video screams of impromptu friendly jam-session, with the relaxed style showing off Trullie’s unusually deep voice and Green’s touching delivery. Both portray the song’s desperate and lonely quality remarkably well, which makes the unfolding storyline all the more bittersweet and disarmingly winsome.
