Modern Killers

Some people (or one youtube commenter on The Dead Weather’s video in particular) think that Filter or Chris Cornell exemplify quality modern classics these days, but Jack White’s latest project The Dead Weather proves the real winner in my opinion. With Alison Mosshart (The Kills) on vocals, Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs) on bass, Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) on guitar, and Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs) on the unlikely choice of drums, it’s a strange but strong lineup that seems to be plucked from millions of peoples’ imaginations, and BOY does it work! Their first single, Hang You From The Heavens, is a simplistic but sturdy fuzzed-out blues rock riff with thumping, awesomely produced and powerful sounding drums, far from Jack’s usual sloppy and slow beats that White Stripes drummer Meg White makes. Not to diss Meg, who we love with undying swooning glee, but The Dead Weather is like a forceful blues/punk rock behemoth coming in from the cold to harness our indecision in these difficult times (Recession Rock?). See the video for this song below, and also check out The Dead Weather’s version of Gary Numan‘s popular-to-cover 1979 number one hit Are Friends Electric? With the cascading discords in the vein of The Butthole Surfers and clunky organs doing the main riff it’s a weird but wonderful take on the classic. Better than The Sugababes? I think so. The videos for the two songs are alarmingly similar, seeming to serve as oddball promo items, which is in essence what music videos are, so all power to them. Download both songs below and watch their other video for Are Friends Electric? on youtube.
