Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls

Put your entire EP up for free download on your website and it shall be listened to and blogged about. Melbourne’s Tim Shiel is a celebrated experimental artist creating music by himself under the guise of Faux Pas. His psychedelic experimental electronic music frequently bursts and gasps into various forms of life, as if it were a prehistoric animal casually transforming from land mammal to sea creature to land mammal again. A lot of imagination is put into Faux Pas, with cascading synths and bleeps and SFX melting together in a hazy bowl of noise. It’s like eavesdropping on your crush’s dreams. Tim is a self-confessed homebody, which is rather fortunate for us, as he produces imaginative and enjoyable music and entertaining and informative entries on his blog! Including some amazing music videos he found on youtube (Earth Wind and Fire’s Let’s Groove), guilty pleasures (Friendly Fires’ Paris video) and what he gets up to in the weekend (Dungeons and Dragons). One wonders if Tim might be trying to soundtrack his own computer-generated adventures with Faux Pas, and sharing them – like one does their Dungeons and Dragons experiences – with the world. He also answers listener’s questions about his music. “I am a software kind of guy. Some people are gear fetishists, they want the hardware - to them I say, good luck with that. My studio is in my lounge room and my bank account is always close to empty so… It’s probably for the best that I’m not a gear nerd,” he says. Faux Pas’ music is spacey and dreamy, ideal for sound tracking and inspiring gazing into space/buzzing out/reading/sleeping (in a good way). Track one from the Waterfalls EP, Chasing Waterfalls, is a fruity saxophone and blip-sampling hurricane of great space jazz electronica goodness, it’s fun to listen to and introduces so many ideas (some of which you may have previously thought so wrong, like tinkling banjos in the distance and sweeping, emotive orchestral samples) but it somehow it is very cohesive and it all just works.
