Wear Wolf

The Eels’ Mark ‘E’ Everett has finally come out of hiding and is releasing his first album in four years on June 2. Famous for his slacker alternative rock music, songs such as Novocaine For The Soul, Susan’s House, Your Lucky Day In Hell and Last Stop: This Town have always held a special place close to my heart. He’s always been similar to Beck in my book, but vaguely underground and covert, always seeming to lay low, like fellow Californian-based Fiona Apple (whose musical partner, Jon Brion, has also been known to work with Eels). E’s ’90s underground hits were staples in road trips and house parties, and I’m sure many of you have Beautiful Freak or Electro Shock Blues in your CD collection somewhere. Now you can add the seventh Eels album to that list, Hombre Lobo, featuring the lead single (below), Fresh Blood. Apparently Hombre Lobo is Spanish for Wolf Man or Werewolf, and some claim this is a reference to E’s elaborate beard which he coincidentally began growing when writing the song Dog Faced Boy. He said to Spinner, “I wrote a song a few years ago called I Want to Protect You that was about wanting to protect someone from the wolves. Now I am the wolf.” Fresh Blood is a wonderful creepy stomping alt-pop song in the vein of Eels’ former hits, I’m sure that you will dig it just as I do!
