Better Than Sex will probably start charging me soon, but it’s not my fault they post some of the best music on the internet. So I’m posting about another band I found on their wonderful website, this time it’s London band CHEW LiPS. The band only formed in 2008 and already they are touring with The Virgins and Amazing Baby. Their rise in the music world has been quick, and the band even seem surprised by it. They only played their first house party on May 10th last year and in less than a year have already found themselves filling some of London’s hottest clubs, hyped along by the music press. On top of that, they have been picked up by French record label Kitsune (Heartsrevolution, Crystal Castles), who has released their début single ‘Solo’.
The Three piece band is made up of Tigs on vocals with Will and James sampling and playing all sorts of crazy instruments. Their music has a disco quality, balanced between simple melodies, tiring drones and dispersed with sharp electro drum beats. CHEW LiPS definitely don’t claim to be doing anything ground breaking, but their sound is undeniably smooth and achieves what it sets out to do. It sits perfectly between spacey disco and spacious drone pop, which in a strange unconfrontational way puts it nicely in a small padded box .
