Mighty Mighty, Wellington

Photos and words by Carmen Gaffney

Carmen Gaffney is going to be taking live photos for us in Wellington. We’d like to welcome her to EMJ. She also wrote a few words to go with her photos.

The first thing I noticed was that I was pretty much the only black person at a hip hop gig. I also noticed all the older people, especially men, which made up a good portion of the crowd, probably because the rugby was on and the Hurricanes had won. Tommy Ill had just gone on by the time I got there and was full of energy, sweating all over the crowd. The audience were hanging back a bit getting into the strong hip hop beats; at first you don’t really take notice of the witty, tongue in cheek lyrics, but once you do you can’t help listening to every word. Definitely a lot of fun to see.

Little Pictures were quite different from the last time I saw them; now with a saxophone and incorporating hip hop tracks into their sweet pop songs. Always happy and lovely, it just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy seeing them. I loved the bubbles as well.

Tourettes came out and instantly grabbed the audience’s attention. Some of the crowd didn’t really seem to know what to make of the performance; standing back and listening attentively. I was getting pretty into it, but maybe that’s just the black in me.
