God Bows To Math- Depravity EP
7/10
This EP is noisy; sharp guitar sounds, scream-y vocals, thick bass lines and fast crashing drums. The only thing that lets it down is the repetitive distortion that runs at the end of the songs. Recorded before Camp A Low Hum when Jeremy was still playing bass in the band, the EP captures the band’s first year together especially well. On stage the band is chaotic, some would say diabolic and it’s captured here, except for Jeremy’s hilarious stage banter, which is best left for the live show. Martin’s guitar playing is particularly highlighted on record. Modelled on Sharpie Crows guitarist Casey Lattimer, Martin carves high pitch guitar riffs into clusters of distorted noise, leaping out and strangling itself with it’s own debauched sound. ‘Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo’ and ‘How to Beat Your Dad At Chess’ unleash an untamed beast, moulding themselves together with outro/intro noise. The two songs highlight both the bands quick stabs and longer fighting tracks before ‘Brooke Howard Smith’ comes along to bridge the gap between the two and to crack the skull of one of the countries biggest self-celebrating wanna-be celebrities. Again they try and fuse the songs together, but it doesn’t work quite so well, being to drawn out and using some pretty uninteresting noises. Thankfully they leave the noisy endings alone for the last two tracks, the deadly quick ‘2Shy’ and ‘Hands Around Your Mum’, which end the EP with some definite hardcore rebellion, tongue-in-cheek none the less.
