Satellite Skin/
Guilty Cocker Spaniels 7″

On the weekend I got something every music fan loves: a teaser containing the lead single plus b-side for the forthcoming EP of a musical great. Modest Mouse is releasing the single ‘Satellite Skin’ on May 26 in the US ahead of their EP No One’s First And You’re Next, due out in August.

The ‘Satellite Skin’/'Guilty Cocker Spaniels’ 7″ will be released on a limited run of 4000 in bright orange 7″ vinyl with an embossed sleeve. Isaac Brock is back to his usual biting, gritty pop in ‘Satellite Skin’, with its catchy guitar riff poking into alt country/rock territory, its rather restrained intro gives way to rollicking rock later on. Though it’s good, to me the stronger song is the b-side, ‘Guilty Cocker Spaniels’. With its purer production and simpler construction it is strong and solid, with the messed up jam in the middle and dual vocals providing pure grunge gold. Here Isaac is kooky, stuttering and wavering atop plucky guitar and shuffling drums. Akin to We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank-era Modest Mouse, its skewered guitars and ramshackle rhythms remind of our own Teen Wolf, not least because Brad’s broken, shivering howl is very reminiscent of Brock’s unrelenting anguish.

For those who want more, ‘Satellite Skin’ also has a weird, Tool-esque video, involving little running letterboxes, a slithery alien and Star Wars-style nuns performing an odd ritual in a creepy, smokey forest. A really cute kid acts in the video, putting eggs in the eye sockets of the aforementioned alien. How messed up must he have thought the video shoot? It’s a far cry from Cowboys and Indians or Hide and Seek.
