Apathetic Princess

It’s no secret that EMJ keeps a close eye on LA, many enigmatic and inspiring artists emanate out of the fog of this famous area. Plenty of bored college kids dabble in music, but many attempt to make it a vocation. I’m not sure of Dasha (svetlana the anthropologist)’s intentions, or even inspirations; she keeps her internet persona hidden behind swathes of droning guitar. I’m not complaining about this, sometimes music needs mystery. The waves of echoey guitar in her ‘demo 1′ and ‘dronesistor radio’ wrap a comforting blanket around you. She plays with Aria Jalali (railcars, micromagician, A/S/L?) who contributes to recordings and live performances, and together they’ve done a quaint and heavy cover of railcars’ ‘Saints Are Waiting For Me Outside My Door’. Dasha’s voice is beautiful with its subtlety, a quality that isn’t extricated enough these days, and its light femininity coupled with the abrasive output of the guitar creates a misty, slanting, warm aura that recreates all the best warm-drone moments. See ‘drone five or you as a forest’ on her myspace to find out why. Maybe one day there’ll be a big apocalyptic exodus of LA musicians to New Zealand and we can all have a big drone party in the forest. That’d be neat.
