Dear Time’s Waste- Room For Rent (EP)
8/10

Clare Duncan, the musician behind Dear Time’s Waste provides a shining example of exactly how to structure a debut EP. A good debut EP should act as an introduction to a band/artists work. It should therefore, display a range of different styles to prove you’re not just a one trick pony. It needs to tell the listener that you have much more to offer; that this is just the beginning and that they are going to be drawn to your next release because you have the ability to grow and evolve your sound. Much like Moron Says What’s Pop Up EP, Room For Rent shows that Clare Duncan is capable of producing a wide variety of music, she even does it slightly better than the already mentioned MSW EP. Opening track ‘Clandestine’ is the brick of the EP; the song that is going to get Dear Time’s Waste international attention. With a slight huskiness in her voice Duncan takes control of the song, blowing smoke rings into the air as she presents herself as a powerful female singer/songwriter. Her voice, a cross between Beach House’s Victoria Legrand and Nico is her greatest asset and she uses it perfectly to her advantage. ‘Room For Rent’ sees Duncan’s voice crying passionately above a gentle drifting layer of distortion. It creates a strange melody that works best on record and shows she has the ability to stretch her vocal range. ‘Polarity’ flies right to other end of her repertoire, a delicate folk-pop song that puts its weight heavily on soft guitar picking to extract its inner beauty. The tempo then shifts again, into ‘Cows’, a dreamy, pressure-filled pop song in a similar vein to opening track ‘Clandestine’. It doesn’t quite have the same emotional output as ‘Clandestine’ which unfortunately makes it slightly less memorable, but it could well be a reprise. ‘Is This What You Had In Mind?’ ends the EP by bearing itself like a confused child. It leaves with a lot of unanswered questions; answers that will come on following Dear Time’s Waste records; answers that we will wait for with a strong anticipation and answers that we know will definitely shed a beautiful light into the world of Clare Duncan, an indie superstar about to spread her wings.
