Misspent Youth

Switching between beautiful, sweet, cascading surf pop to angry, debilitated noise punk, PENS is a cute, compelling band of three young girls, Amelia, Stef and Helen. From the sweet innocence of ‘Pigs’ to the lo-fi grunge dance of ‘Hatred’ to the almost Vivian Girls-esque angelic vocals of ‘High In The Cinema’ to the catchy, pounding mess of ‘The Weekend Starts Here’ and scuzz punk of ‘Freddie’, you can tell they’re not trying that much, but they don’t need to. Touring earlier in the year with the self-destructing Wavves and Friendship, they’ve been working on their debut album Hey Friend, What Are You Doing? to be released on De Stijl later this year, in between their many live shows. They’re embarking on a short West Coast US tour in mid/late August taking in California, Washington and Oregon, with a couple of fundraising gigs in their native UK beforehand. They’re also contributing a song to soon-to-be-released Art Fag split 7″ with gig-mates Graffiti Island, Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles, which is, with that lineup, set to be a covetable collectors item.
