Pop Mutants

Oklahoma’s Starlight Mints have been quietly going about their business since 1997, releasing three albums of sublime indie pop. With a rotating line-up that has included up to seven members at one time, the band has experimented with different string arrangements and orchestral style pop. The current five member line-up sees the band settling back in to a comfortable pop environment, bringing in elements of psychedelia and electro pop.
Starlight Mints’ new album, titled Change Remains, has a jagged, angular pop sound, combining elements of Metronomy, Nathalie Portman’s Shaved Head and The Flaming Lips. Their love of big beat drum sounds and quirky keyboard parts nicely balances against their clever vocal harmonies, all with the intention of filling the room with bright coloured rainbows and images of the cool American coastline. Some of their songs can sound a little cheesy, but placed in context they have a pretty unquestionable charm.
Change Remains was released digitally on June 9 and will get a physical release on July 21 via Barsuk Records.
