Moving Units

Moving Units’ 2003 release Dangerous Dreams was a firm favourite of mine when it came out. Its songs ‘Available’, ‘Emancipation’ and ‘Between Us And Them’ flaunted the band’s trademark post punk and disco basslines, syncopated driving drums and energetic, erratic guitar spats. The whole band worked so well and was so tight, and while Dangerous Dreams wasn’t exactly the commercial success the band deserved, they made an impression. I’ve clung to their memory ever since, bringing up those old tunes that succinctly put Gang Of Four’s erratic rhythm section with taunting, weird vocals the likes of Liars with added disco pop sensibility. They released their sophomore album, Hexes For Exes, in 2007, and somehow it entirely slipped under my radar. From what I’ve heard it sounds more electronic and futuristic, taking the funk in a whole different direction.

The other day they uploaded the first of a series of live videos, a song-by-song account of a set they did at Club Nokia on August 30 with The Faint. First up is the eight minute video below, featuring an elongated ‘Birds of Prey’ followed by ‘Emancipation’. Blake Miller’s voice sounds less energetic and sinewy than on Dangerous Dreams, but the punch of the rhythm parts remain. They’re said to be currently working on new music, it’ll be interesting to see how their future releases pan out.
