This City Is Sinking

Bipolar Bear

The self-proclaimed “grungegaze” band from LA has been bubbling away for some time now, but has unfortunately failed to garner my attention until now, but boy I’m glad they did. Their new song ‘Goth Time Rag’ from their latest album, Harlem Pripyat, out on Mexican Summer, barely surpasses two minutes but it’s got more grunt and ideas than many three-minute pop songs you’ll hear. Kicking into gear immediately with Surf City-esque harmonies, Abe Vigoda vitality and At The Drive In mechanistic riffs, belting out grinding grunge bass guitar and sweet, spiraling rock and roll guitar licks, the song has a powerful grip, likened to that of a boa constrictor by 20jazzfunkgreats.

Harlem Pripyat is the latest in a string of various releases for the band. It’s currently available digitally through Mexican Summer’s website, and will be out on record sometime this month in a limited run of 500 LPs. Encompassing members of The Manifolds and Rose For Bohdan, as well as the two guys behind Kill Shaman Records (who’ve released the spectacular Aa and The Pink Noise), these guys are true pros. Judging from ‘Goth Time Rag’ and the band’s previous output (see below for oldie but goodie ‘Manbase’), Harlem Pripyat is definitely one to own.
