Har Mar Superstar’s (Sean Tillmann) assault on the world has just hit Hollywood, he has already acted in a couple of television commercials (Lynx, Vladivar Vodka) but now he has a minor acting role, playing a fight coach in Whip It, Drew Barrymore’s debut film as a director. As well as acting in the film, his song ‘Never My Love’, recorded with Adam Green and Flea appears on the soundtrack. He’s also just released his own music video starring Hollywood actresses Eva Mendes and Alia Shawkat. In the video both ladies pout at the camera while bubble glitter is blown in their faces, cut in between shots of Tillmann floating around in a spacesuit.

The video is for Har Mar Superstar’s new single ‘Tall Boy’, taken from his new album Dark Touches, out on October 13. The song is packed with pure pop goodness, laced up with electro synths and curvy beats. Strangely, it was originally co-written by Tillmann and Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee) for Britney Spears but the duo decided it was to good for her messy scatterbrain voice and kept it for themselves. However it’s obvious the song was written with Spears in mind, it has all the makings of a top 40 hit, only difference is it’s sung by a hairy fat man instead of a scantly clad solo mum. That, however, shouldn’t have too much effect on the song’s mainstream success, after all Tillmann is dressed in a spacesuit, Mendes and Shawkat are the public faces of Har Mar Superstar.

Live the man cuts a different image, often dancing around the stage half naked, sweaty and casting overtly sexual imagery. He’s a draw card, similar to Girl Talk, instigating a party and going with it until exhaustion takes over. He has a run of dates coming up across the US and Canada in late October/early November in support of his new album and he has personally requested the support of New Zealand’s Bang Bang Eche. Bang Bang Eche’s EP Sonic Death Cuntttt is due to come out halfway through the tour (November 3) so you can expect many of the tour dates to sell out.

Those unfamiliar with Har Mar Superstar have a lot to indulge themselves on. He has been making sweet pop music for the past ten years and has released four full-length albums, a large collection of singles and has contributed to various compilations. His solo adventure started in 1999 when he got bored of playing guitar driven indie rock and became obsessed with dance music. On his website he explains the transition, saying Har Mar Superstar was “a reaction to boring indie rock and how people were taking themselves way too seriously, and any aspect of playing and touring was no fun after a while, and I realized if I go to a dance party and sing an R. Kelly song on a couch, the girls are going to go fucking crazy.” Since then the guitars have gone, replaced by samplers, synthesisers and some high profile vocalists, including Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeah’s) and Beth Ditto (The Gossip).

Not only does he write music, he’s also a comedian and a script writer and is currently in the process of writing a film script and designing a sitcom pilot. He has already found a bit of success with his film exploits, as one third of the comedy duo who designed the hilariously funny Crappy Holidays series of short films. The premise behind the films is to make fun of all the holidays celebrated in North America, including Thanks Giving, St. Patrick’s Day, Valentines Day, 4th of July, etc. There have also been some quite famous stars act in the films, including Justin Long, Prodigal Sunn, Ellen Page and Carl Barat, along with Har Mar himself who often plays the main acting role. Check out some of his stuff (music and films), it’s all riddled with humour but most of it has a sense of irony that explains his kookiness.
