Big Day Out 2011: First Announcement
Tue 28 Sep 2010
Dream Team

Since my mum would let me I’ve been going to Big Day Out. Year after year I’d be late to form class at school because I was too busy jumping up and down listening to the announcements live on 95bFM. 2001 marked my first year of attendance; with the previous year regrettably a miss because of my age, I sulked in the sun all day at home, glued to the intermittent live radio broadcasts. Then Joe Strummer died following his 2000 BDO appearance and I decided I couldn’t miss another one.
But with that memory lane now firmly behind us, allow me to present our Top 5 reasons why you shouldn’t miss Big Day Out 2011.
#1 Iggy & The Stooges: Raw Power

Anyone who doesn’t have these guys on their list is silly. The lithe and writhing Iggy and The Stooges pioneered a sound, an attitude and a vision. They were pure electric fire at Big Day Out in 2006, inviting stage invasions and performing their classic hits with such ferocity that no old man jokes could dare be uttered. Iggy could take on anyone but the fact that he is still such a fun loving, rocking dude and the fact that they can still play with such energy and talent puts them hands down at the top.

#2 Lupe Fiasco: The Coolest

This guy doesn’t miss a beat. Lupe’s set at Big Day Out 2009 was flawless and unstoppable, with the rapper bouncing around the boiler room non stop, but never screwing up his ultra smooth delivery, it was totally captivating and exciting. Lupe totally engaged the crowd with his lively nature and his set alternated perfectly between gliding skater songs and political rousing. He owned the boiler room that year and I have no doubt he’ll do it again this time.
#3 Crystal Castles: Death To Disco

While I’m glad Nick Diamonds (The Unicorns, Islands)’ cruel rumour starting yesterday on Twitter about Crystal Castles dying after imbibing too much angel dust now can’t be true, I’m more glad that we’re finally going to get a taste of their violent thrash electronica for ourselves. We’ve waited too long for this one, but Alice Glass and Ethan Kath don’t seem to be getting sedate in their old age. Their sound has evolved to be more tuneful and ambient; all the more reason to see them live now.

#4 Andrew WK: Party God

To be honest it’s more about the performance than the music for me with Andrew WK. His party hard ethos, eternal fun loving every minute of every hour, every day inspires me. ‘Party Hard’ is a party staple, and with WK now doing motivational speaking and insane TV shows, there’s no question Andrew WK’s set at BDO 2011 is going to be anything less than life affirming.
#5 M.I.A.: Freedom Fighter

How could the mother of invention not get a mention? While her latest material doesn’t have me gobsmacked like her earlier albums, M.I.A. is still an experimental goddess who demands attention. Never shying from controversy, M.I.A. earns respect for her bold and almost dangerous moves, self-affirmation but not self-aggrandising, and righteous music. Nothing will slow this woman down, so it’s recommended you catch her while you can.

Nobody seems to be ‘incredibly pumped’ about Grinderman.
