Besieged by the vagaries of power

So this is what Nick Thorburn has been up to! The elusive Canadian who stole our hearts with The Unicorns and then Islands has been hanging out with Man Man’s Ryan “Honus Honus” Kattner and Modest Mouse and The Shins’ Joe Plummer, and their resulting band Mister Heavenly sounds exactly like what you’d expect from an amalgamation of their bands. Fruity and rollicking, the stupidly titled single ‘Pineapple Girl’ is a fun swoon pop package with sighing and rhyming and spiky percussion. Nick’s odd enunciation is intact and Honus’ gravelly undertaking picks it up where Nick leaves off. The song is emphatic and the drums spray cymbals like breaking waves. It’s short and sweet in nature but listen closely to the weird lyrics – they’ll keep you coming back for more. And if this wasn’t enough to pique your interest, Michael Cera is in their touring line-up. The bassist-playing actor from Hollywood movies Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is now playing bass for real. The apparant connection? The mumblecore icon starred in Islands’ video for last year’s single ‘No You Don’t’. The band’s debut album Out of Love is coming out on Sub Pop on August 16.
