JEFF The Brotherhood: new single

Thu 11 Nov 2010

Castle Of Buried Bones

This sentence, finish it: When JEFF The Brotherhood stop by New Zealand for three dates in early December, you can expect _______.  If you answered ‘the unexpected’, not only are you wrong, you’re boring. Instead, the unexpected can expect JEFF The Brotherhood. ‘Less is more’, say the critics who patronise bands by judging them by the amount of members they have. Thankfully, brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall are overriding these preconceptions of two-piece (and/or) family-band guitar music by producing some ripping riff music that could easily be mistaken for a bigger, fuller band. You can hear a bit of where they’re coming from in their music – the biting growl of obscure ‘70s hard rock bands and southern rock bands that fostered these brothers are the same that now help define their songs. In fact, you can hear a lot of where they’re coming from, even as far as the way of punk and hardcore.

But not country, apparently – even though they’re from Nashville (as a side note: they actually live down the road from Al Gore – he’s even friends with their dad). But instead of heeding the Southern call to cowboy glory, they left their boots at home and instead went on to become the founding flames of Be Your Own Pet. It wasn’t long before the two brothers wanted less full-band restrictions and more free-form adventure, however, and soon came to form what was then known as just JEFF. And they’re still making a name for themselves today with wildly fun, spontaneous live shows. So spontaneous, they say, they don’t even practice.

They’ve been around for nearly 9 years, now, and after half a dozen albums released on their family label, Infinity Cat, they still don’t even have a Wikipedia page. They have a myspace, though – and heading in that direction you’ll find the kind of guitarish meaty drive that will soon be chugging away down under. A couple of days ago the band released a new song online via RCRDLBL. Titled ‘Diamond Way’, it’s the first song released by the band since selling out of their Heavy Days 12″, which has now been pressed for a third time.

Miley Cyrus: Adios Twitter

Mon 12 Oct 2009

“No more Emo Quotes and
Fake Feuds with Demi”

Not that we followed her anyway, but Miley Cyrus has made a rap video to explain to fans why she deleted her Twitter account. While its safe to say her rapping blows, her clear enunciation and deep voice admittedly suits the rapping style rather well. And the reasons she gives for abandoning the popular form of constant public communication are to be applauded. “The reasons are simple; I started tweeting ’bout pimples, I stopped living for moments and started living for people… Everything that I type and everything that I do, all those lame gossip sites take it and they make it news… I want my private life private… I ain’t living for tabloids, I’m living for me… The truth is I’m too busy.” Could be one of the smartest things she’s ever done.
