Melt Your Mind In the Gutter

Trance punk five piece Strip Mall Seizures have a gritty angst in their wiry basslines and gleaming synth bleeps. Their pummeling bass and whiney, wily vocals all interlock to create the kind of bizarre noise you might expect from bored kids from Oakland, California, but Strip Mall Seizures are anything but ordinary. Their songs like ‘Free Money’ have an almost coincidental depth; while their music seems hung up on the superficiality of modern life, this song marries plentiful and spectrum-busting electronica with thrash punk in the best possible way. With epileptic energy in the rhythm and burlesque cabaret-style keyboards, it’s an effervescent assault. The epic frenetic energy of ‘Grown Men and Women’ which uses snipping scissors and ripping paper for a rhythm(!) is a highlight. They also have jaunts into manic depressive dirge punk rock (’I Believe In’) and polka/free jazz/punk (’Possessed’), which really has to be heard to be believed. You can buy their album, The Secret To Financial Freedom, from their amazing website, where they pose some very interesting questions upfront.
